In order to improve the well-being of dogs during veterinary visits, we aimed to investigate the effect of human social interactions on behavior and physiology (heart rate, maximal ocular surface temperature, salivary cortisol and rectal temperature) during a routine veterinary examination.

Firstly, our findings showed that the veterinary examinations produced acute stress responses in dogs. Secondly, the study demonstrates for the first time that owner-dog interactions improve the well-being of dogs during a veterinary examination and that the duration of owner-dog interactions did not influence the results.
